Planes, Trains and Automobiles
So the year is nearly over, and I've been looking over how much travelling I've done this year. I use Dopplr to track all my trips, and it gives me some interesting statistics about my travelling.
I've not done any major international trips this year, Dublin and Paris were the only ones which involved leaving the country, but I've done more domestic travelling this year than ever before. As I've moved to being a full time Web Designer / Developer I've had the opportunity to attend a fair few conferences and web-related events which has bumped up my miles a fair bit.
My travel journal for 2008 is as follows:
- Sheffield from November 29th to 30th.
- Leicester from November 18th to 19th.
- London on October 17th.
- London from October 7th to 11th.
- Southampton on October 6th.
- Paris from September 10th to 13th.
- Brighton from September 4th to 6th.
- Dublin from August 12th to 15th, 2008.
- Alton on June 4th, 2008.&
- Edinburgh from July 18th to 20th, 2008.
- London from May 28th to 30th, 2008.
- London from April 16th to 18th, 2008.
- London from March 12th to 14th, 2008.
- Brighton from January 25th to 26th, 2008.
Most of these trips were by train, a few by car, Dublin and Paris were by Plane. The total carbon output based on my travelling this year was 915 kg CO2. This sounds a lot, but if I compare this to my trip to Toronto by air in 2007, which generated 1,264 kg CO2 then it doesn't seem so bad!
One of the funkiest features of Dopplr is that it averages my travel speed over the past 12 months, and calculates my 'personal velocity', and compares it to the animal kingdom.
So who knows how much travelling I'll be doing next year, I already have 2 trips planned, and it's not even January!
